My Grandfather, Smerconish, and me.

Gino Guarnere and Wild Bill Guarnere, Thanksgiving Day, 2007On October 3rd, 2007, my grandfather and Babe Heffron went on the Michael Smerconish show to promote their new book.  The interview was typical of one featuring my grandfather:  lively, no regard for the FCC, and a tell-it-like-it-is approach.  Smerconish loves Wild Bill and has him on the show quite a bit.

On this particular morning, I was driving into work while listening, and I decided to call in.  I happened to have Michael’s producer’s phone number programmed into my cell, and I was able to get right through.  She graciously gave me the phone number to dial and I was immediately placed into the caller queue.  Michael put me through a few calls in, and it was a hoot to speak to him via my cell phone while driving into work.  The interview is great, and I’m posting this because my grandfather is awesome.  I’m simply another one of his admirers.

Enjoy!

  1. The man is an Icon.  This is not only because of what he did in the war but who he is and what he is about period.  I believe that goes first for me.  He did what he believed in during the War for His Country which he loved.  He led his men and cared for them and watched over them.  He was silent after the war about those times..but...we knew and loved him and still love him as a person.  He is truly awesome.  He has a kind heart, is empathetic, a straight up guy and...yes, he is a hero for what he did for his Country.  For those of those that are family, we love him totally for exactly who he has always been to us. He watched over us whether it be a pregnancy, bad cold, or a heartache.  He is real.  We are a family of flag waving Americans because of him.  But, we are also a family who loves him for his humor and good guidance.  Is he a Hero?!! Dam Right!  He is Easy Company, 101st Airborne who knew in his heart what was to be done.  To his grandchildren and to me, I too admire him..More so, I love him.  I have learned much from his wisdom and his life.
He is in many ways a Very Gentle Giant who loved giving you your night feeding so that I could get some rest.  And, he loved it!  You always as a baby made him smile.

Nice reading on “Pop” Gino.  He was a War Hero and a man who wanted to rock, feed, hold and put his first grandchild (you) back safely to sleep.  Now, whataguy!
